{"id":1038,"date":"2011-01-05T23:08:42","date_gmt":"2011-01-06T05:08:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/?p=1038"},"modified":"2011-01-05T23:08:42","modified_gmt":"2011-01-06T05:08:42","slug":"how-many-warnings-does-the-army-need-before-preventing-a-suicide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/how-many-warnings-does-the-army-need-before-preventing-a-suicide.html","title":{"rendered":"How Many Warnings Does The Army Need Before Preventing A Suicide?"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>How many soldiers have to die at their own hand, despite their pleadings for help and warnings\u00a0to others, before the military takes them seriously?<\/p>\r\n<p>The New York Times Sunday\u00a0did a Page One story on yet\u00a0another apparent military suicide, in a story headlined\u00a0&#8220;Several Warnings, Then a Soldier&#8217;s Lonely Death.&#8221; It is the story of Staff Sgt.\u00a0David Senft, 27, who was found dead Nov. 15 with a single bullet wound to his head, sitting in an SUV parked at an American air base in\u00a0Afghanistan.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/02\/world\/asia\/02suicide.html?_r=1&amp;ref=todayspaper\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/02\/world\/asia\/02suicide.html?_r=1&amp;ref=todayspaper<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The Army characterized Senft&#8217;s death as resulting from &#8220;injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident,&#8221; according to The Times. The paper then went on to chronicle the tragedy of Senft&#8217;s case, and how the Army may have prevented his death.<\/p>\r\n<p>First, the Army sent Senft\u00a0to Afghanistan after he had tried to commit suicide twice at Fort Campbell, Ky. When he got to Afghanistan,\u00a0Senft was having so many mental difficulties that the Army took away his weapon and made him get counseling.\u00a0Senft killed himself with a weapon he stole\u00a0from his roommate.<\/p>\r\n<p>Senft&#8217;s father asks some pointed, and logical, questions about the Army and his son.\u00a0Why did the Army deploy Senft to combat when he was suicidal? Why did the Army leave him there when he was obviously still having mental problems?<\/p>\r\n<p>Senft had come from a troubled family life.\u00a0And the horror of his his experience as crew chief for a Black Hawk helicopter during a tour in Iraq\u00a0haunted him, according to The Times.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The Army told\u00a0The Times that it is still investigating Senft&#8217;s death and how the Army handled his case. It&#8217;s too bad the military had not given his case\u00a0that kind of scrutiny before he put a bullet in his brain.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How many soldiers have to die at their own hand, despite their pleadings for help and warnings\u00a0to others, before the military takes them seriously?
