{"id":1074,"date":"2011-01-20T00:56:06","date_gmt":"2011-01-20T06:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/?p=1074"},"modified":"2011-01-20T00:56:06","modified_gmt":"2011-01-20T06:56:06","slug":"fda-to-consider-how-important-tests-are-for-alzheimers-a-disease-with-no-cure","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/2011\/01\/fda-to-consider-how-important-tests-are-for-alzheimers-a-disease-with-no-cure.html","title":{"rendered":"FDA To Consider How Important Tests Are for Alzheimer&#8217;s, A Disease With No Cure"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>Depending on who you believe in the media, we are coming closer to having methods to determine if someone has Alzheimer&#8217;s disease &#8212; or federal regulators are unimpressed with at least one of the potential solutions.<\/p>\r\n<p>The New York Times Wednesday ran an upbeat story with the headline &#8220;Two Tests Could Aid In Risk Assessment\u00a0And Early Diagnosis of Alzheimer&#8217;s.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/19\/health\/research\/19alzheimers.html?_r=1&amp;ref=us\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2011\/01\/19\/health\/research\/19alzheimers.html?_r=1&amp;ref=us<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The Times noted that one new\u00a0study had evaluated\u00a0a new kind of brain scan that detects the plaques in the brain that are characteristic of Alzheimers&#8217;.\u00a0On Thursday\u00a0a Food and Drug Administration committee is scheduled to review that study and recommend\u00a0whether that test should get the go-ahead to be\u00a0marketed.<\/p>\r\n<p>The new brain scan involves what The Times described as\u00a0a dye\u00a0created by Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, which is part of Eli Lilly &amp; Co. That dye\u00a0is supposed to attach to the plaque in the brain, beta amyloid, &#8220;lighting&#8221; it up\u00a0so that it becomes visible\u00a0in PET scans.<\/p>\r\n<p>In contrast to the upbeat report in The Times, The Wall Street Journal said the dye that finds plaque, which it named as the\u00a0drug\u00a0Amyvid,\u00a0was being given a dim eye by the FDA committee. The Journal, in a story headlined &#8220;FDA Skeptical About Detecting Alzheimer&#8217;s,&#8221;\u00a0reported that two FDA reviewers\u00a0are recommending that Amyvid not be approved. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704678004576090320296403228.html?KEYWORDS=alzheimer%27s\">http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748704678004576090320296403228.html?KEYWORDS=alzheimer%27s<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>At least two FDA reviewers questioned the need for the new scan since there isn&#8217;t even a cure for Alzheimer&#8217;s yet. And according to The Journal, the first question the FDA will be asked to address Thursday is &#8220;whether knowledge of brain amyloid plaque\u00a0would have &#8216;clinical usefulness.'&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>A second study investigated whether\u00a0a blood test can detect the presence of the protein that comprises Alzheimer&#8217;s plaque, beta amyloid, according to The Times.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The studies were reported Wednesday in The\u00a0Journal of the American Medical Association.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/content\/305\/3\/261.full\">http:\/\/jama.ama-assn.org\/content\/305\/3\/261.full<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Depending on who you believe in the media, we are coming closer to having methods to determine if someone has Alzheimer&#8217;s disease &#8212; or federal regulators are unimpressed with at least one of the potential solutions.
