The 89-year-old ex-senator was\u00a0airlifted to the hospital Friday\u00a0night after\u00a0he fell down and struck\u00a0his head outside Dakota Wesleyan University’s McGovern Library, according to The Daily Republic. McGovern was going there to\u00a0appear on a live broadcast\u00a0of “The Contenders,” a C-SPAN\u00a0series about\u00a0candidates who unsuccessfully ran for President but still had a dramatic impact on politics and history.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
McGovern was the\u00a0Democratics candidate for President\u00a0in 1972, losing to Richard Nixon.<\/p>\r\n
According to The Daily Republic, Dr. Michael Elliott, chief medical officer at Avera McKennan Hospital, said, “Sen.\u00a0McGovern is alert and resting comfortably but, as with any head injury, it is important that we observe the situation closely.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
In a press release, Avera McKennan said\u00a0that McGovern’s family\u00a0extended its\u00a0gratitude and appreciation for the many prayers and well wishes it\u00a0has received.<\/p>\r\n
But the\u00a0family also requested\u00a0privacy\u00a0so it can\u00a0focus on McGovern’s recovery.<\/p>\r\n
McGovern is a native and part-time resident of Mitchell, S.D., and a DWU alumnus.<\/p>\r\n
C-SPAN went forward with its two-hour “Contenders” episode without McGovern.\u00a0 A panel\u00a0discussed McGovern’s 1972 race, and the series aired\u00a0video clips of him, according to The Daily Republic.<\/p>\r\n
