http:\/\/leader-news.whereilive.com.au\/your-news\/story\/brain-trauma-and-depression-a-new-treatment\/#<\/a><\/p>\r\nThe TMS research is being funded through\u00a0a grant that\u00a0the Alfred center has received from the Victoria Neurotrauma Initiative, a $63 million fund dedicated to\u00a0TBI and spinal-cord-injury research.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0Researchers at the Alfred center noted that many don’t realize that depression is often common, although it’s sometimes not recognized,\u00a0in those who suffer head injuries — even non-traumatic injuries.<\/p>\r\n
The problem for those with TBI is that the medications typically used to treat depression don’t work for them, and there hasn’t been much research done on ways to treat depression of the brain-injured.<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0TMS, which is now approved for use in the United States, has been used\u00a0to treat depression for about 15 years.\u00a0It’s effective for 30 percent to 50 percent of those suffering from depression.\u00a0But TMS hasn’t\u00a0been used\u00a0to combat\u00a0depression in those with brain damage.<\/p>\r\n
TMS uses a magnetic field to stimulate nerve cells in the brain. An electric\u00a0plastic-coated coil device is put close to the scalp of the patient being treated,\u00a0creating a magnetic field that\u00a0triggers electrical activity in the tissue below the coil.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
\u00a0TMS helps improve a patient’s mood, motor control and cognitive\u00a0functions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n
