{"id":546,"date":"2010-06-02T16:32:22","date_gmt":"2010-06-02T22:32:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/?p=546"},"modified":"2010-06-07T13:33:12","modified_gmt":"2010-06-07T19:33:12","slug":"the-difference-between-life-and-death-bret-michaels-and-gary-colemans-brain-hemorrhages","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/2010\/06\/the-difference-between-life-and-death-bret-michaels-and-gary-colemans-brain-hemorrhages.html","title":{"rendered":"The Difference Between Life And Death: Bret Michaels&#8217; And Gary Coleman&#8217;s Brain Hemorrhages"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The New York Daily News Wednesday posed a question that may have crossed many people\u2019s minds: Why did former child star Gary Coleman die last week of a brain hemorrhage, while rocker Bret Michaels lived?<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/lifestyle\/health\/2010\/06\/02\/2010-06-02_brain_injuries_like_the_ones_suffered_by_bret_michaels_and_gary_coleman_can_have.html\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/lifestyle\/health\/2010\/06\/02\/2010-06-02_brain_injuries_like_the_ones_suffered_by_bret_michaels_and_gary_coleman_can_have.html<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Coleman, who had a lifelong history of health problems, suffered an intracranial brain hemorrhage when he slipped and fell in his Utah home last Wednesday after undergoing his usual dialysis treatment. Only 42 years old, Coleman went into a coma in the hospital on Thursday, and his family ended his life support on Friday.<\/p>\r\n<p>Michaels, on the other\u00a0hand, was at his Arizona home when he suddenly felt an incredible pain in his head. His wife rushed the singer to the hospital, where he\u00a0was diagnosed with a\u00a0subarachnoid brain hemorrhage. After some shakey moments, 47-year-old Michaels pulled through, and appeared on the finale of \u201cCelebrity Apprentice,\u201d which he won.<\/p>\r\n<p>Reporter Rosemary Black explains the difference between the two brain hemorrhages.\u00a0An intracranial\u00a0hemorrhage takes place inside the brain, while a subarachnoid hemorrhage is bleeding into the lining around the brain.<\/p>\r\n<p>Black interviewed physicians who said that the location of brain hemorrhage will determine if it will kill or not,\u00a0if it will disable a patient in some way, or if they will fully recover.\u00a0Of course, that\u2019s\u00a0just common sense: If the part of your brain that controls your breathing is damaged,\u00a0 let\u2019s face it, it\u2019s unlikely you\u2019re going to have a good outcome.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>One doctor added that Coleman\u2019s poor health, he had two kidney transplants during his life and was on dialysis,\u00a0likely made his prognosis grim after his brain injury.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>But then Michaels wasn\u2019t a particularly well man. He had just had his appendix removed and\u00a0he was a lifelong diabetic. And I believe that Michaels\u2019 physician is jumping the gun by telling the press that the singer has fully recovered, that he is part of the small group of people \u2014 only 20 percent \u2014 who bounce back like new from this\u00a0type of brain hemorrhage.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>I have written extensively on my blog, <a href=\"http:\/\/subtlebraininjury.com\/\">http:\/\/subtlebraininjury.com\/<\/a>, about apparent full recovery brain injury. Problems can develop later on with people who have sustained brain injury and appear to be back to normal. For example, those who have jobs that require their minds to have a high processing speed may find it harder to claim \u201cfull recovery\u201d than those with less taxing jobs.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>And in a recent interview Michaels himself said, \u201cI\u2019m just not back to where I want to be just yet.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.popeater.com\/2010\/06\/04\/bret-michaels-health-american-idol\/?ncid=webmaildl2\">http:\/\/www.popeater.com\/2010\/06\/04\/bret-michaels-health-american-idol\/?ncid=webmaildl2<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0He performed Memorial Day weekend, and in the interview said, \u201cOn stage, normally, I go completely insane and kick ass.
