It found\u00a0 a significant increase\u00a0in the likelihood of developing dementia &#8212; nearly \u00a0twice as high &#8212; for ex-solidiers\u00a0who have\u00a0PTSD compared to\u00a0those who don&#8217;t.<\/p>\r\n<p>Deborah Barnes at the University of California\u00a0in San Francisco conducted the research, with\u00a0her team keeping track of more than 180,000 veterans for seven years. Of that group, more than 53,000 had been diagnosed with PTSD.<\/p>\r\n<p>Nobody in the group had dementia in late 2000, but by late 2007 about 31,000, or 17 percent, developed\u00a0faulty memories and cognitive disorders.\u00a0\u00a0As it turned out, the veterans with\u00a0PTSD had roughly an 11 percent chance\u00a0of getting dementia over the seven-year period of the study, compared with 7 percent for vets who don&#8217;t suffer from PTSD.<\/p>\r\n<p>And after doing some adjustments of risk factors, the study determined that the veterans with PTSD\u00a0were 77 percent more likely to get dementia than vets without PTSD.<\/p>\r\n<p>Barnes&#8217; study was financed by the\u00a0Department of Defense and the National Institute on Aging, and was published in the June issue of the journal\u00a0&#8220;Archives of General Psychiatry.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/archpsyc.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/67\/6\/608\">\u00a0http:\/\/archpsyc.ama-assn.org\/cgi\/content\/abstract\/67\/6\/608<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0The study, however, is\u00a0not definitive, according to Barnes.
