The Marine with the PTSD is Gunner, a bomb-sniffing dog.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703859204575525991305561822.html?mod=ITP_TEST\">http:\/\/online.wsj.com\/article\/SB10001424052748703859204575525991305561822.html?mod=ITP_TEST<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The Wall Street Journal this week wrote the\u00a0story about Deb and Dan Dunham, who have adopted the Labrador retriever and are trying to help him recover from the trauma of combat.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>The Dunhams, who live in Scio, N.Y.,\u00a0are getting over their own emotional heartache, according to The Journal.\u00a0In 2004 their 22-year-old Marine son, Corporal Jason Dunham,\u00a0during combat in Iraq\u00a0threw his helmet over a live granade to protect two of his men.\u00a0They walked away with wounds, but\u00a0Jason took a piece of\u00a0scrapnel in his brain. He went into a coma, The Journal reported.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Jason stayed alive and was brought to a naval hospital in Maryland,\u00a0but the Durhams were told that their son would not regain consciousness.\u00a0The family had him taken off life support, as per the wishes he expressed before he went overseas. Jason won a Medal of Honor for his heroism.<\/p>\r\n<p>Gunner, in turn, was trained to find explosives and was deployed to\u00a0Afghanistan. But combat duty eventualy proved too much for the dog, and it was decided he needed to be shipped back to the states.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Journal did separate stories about the Dunhams and Gunner, and family was among those\u00a0that told the Marines they wanted to adopt the dog.
