{"id":912,"date":"2010-10-19T09:47:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-19T15:47:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/?p=912"},"modified":"2010-10-19T09:47:45","modified_gmt":"2010-10-19T15:47:45","slug":"nfl-considers-socking-players-with-suspensions-for-helmet-hits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/2010\/10\/nfl-considers-socking-players-with-suspensions-for-helmet-hits.html","title":{"rendered":"NFL Considers Socking Players With Suspensions For Helmet Hits"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>After a spate of player concussions and injuries this past weekend, it looks like the National Football League is poised to crack down on players who made hard head hits during games.<\/p>\r\n<p>Several press accounts, including one in The New York Times Tuesday, reported that the NFL would mete out tough penalties and possibly even suspend players who\u00a0inflicted dangerous blows to the heads of other players.\u00a0NFL executive vice president of operations Ray Anderson warned of the coming actions Monday.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/19\/sports\/football\/19hits.html?_r=1&amp;ref=sports\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/10\/19\/sports\/football\/19hits.html?_r=1&amp;ref=sports<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0The NFL should take action after the\u00a0long list of shenanigans last Sunday.\u00a0After being hit in the helmet Detroit Lions linebacker Zack Follett was hosptialized overnight.\u00a0Pittsburgh Steelers\u00a0player James Harrison &#8220;knocked\u00a0two Cleveland Brown players out of the game with head injuries,&#8221; according to The Times.<\/p>\r\n<p>And the topper seems to have been New England&#8217;s Brandon Meriweather, who was penalized for\u00a0his hit on Baltimore&#8217;s Todd Heap.<\/p>\r\n<p>The Times quoted Anderson as saying that the league didn&#8217;t want another Darryl Stingley incident on its watch, referring to the New England Patriots player who\u00a0was paralyzed in a 1978 hit and died in 2007.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>There is even talk of suspensions for helmet-to-helmet hits, a suggestion made on-air Sunday by former NFL player Rodney Harrison, who had a reputation as a hard-hitting &#8212; even dirty&#8211; player during his career.\u00a0According to The Times, \u00a0Harrison said that that suspensions, not fines, &#8220;got his attention&#8221; when he was playing.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0The NFL competition committee might even consider barring all hits that invovle using a helmet, The Times reported.<\/p>\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After a spate of player concussions and injuries this past weekend, it looks like the National Football League is poised to crack down on players who made hard head hits during games.
