{"id":999,"date":"2010-12-13T20:22:49","date_gmt":"2010-12-14T02:22:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/?p=999"},"modified":"2010-12-13T20:24:38","modified_gmt":"2010-12-14T02:24:38","slug":"nfl-holds-summit-on-updating-helmet-safety-standards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/waiting.com\/blog\/2010\/12\/nfl-holds-summit-on-updating-helmet-safety-standards.html","title":{"rendered":"NFL Holds Summit On Updating Helmet Safety Standards"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<p>The National Football League last week held a summit on how safety standards for football helmets can be modernized and improved, gathering equipment makers, physicists and &#8220;military biomechanists&#8221; for the discussion, according to The New York Times.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/09\/sports\/football\/09helmets.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=%22NFL%22%20and%20%22helmets%22&amp;st=cse\">http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/12\/09\/sports\/football\/09helmets.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=%22NFL%22%20and%20%22helmets%22&amp;st=cse<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>The problem today with helmets is that they are designed to protect a player from injuries such as skull\u00a0fractures, but not to guard against more subtle and hidden brain trauma, like concussions. The Times has done several stories about the fact that the helmet-safety guides set by the\u00a0National Organizing Committee on Standards for Athletic\u00a0Equipment haven&#8217;t changed since 1973.<\/p>\r\n<p>There apparently was a lot of talk and little agreement during last Wednesday&#8217;s summit in Manhattan, except on one point: That the football helmets worn by youth players should have different standards than\u00a0those for NFL players. While the youth helmets are lighter, their performance specs are the same as for the pros,\u00a0despite their physical differences, according to The Times.<\/p>\r\n<p>Also at the meeting, several equipment managers\u00a0also demonstrated their &#8220;in-helmet accelerometers,&#8221; which can help\u00a0identify\u00a0the collisions that cause\u00a0concussions.<\/p>\r\n<p>The issue of helmet safety is an ongoing study. The Consumer Products Safety Commission\u00a0last week said it would investigate helmet standards, which it is doing at the request of Sen.
