LOW LOSS AIR BEDS

Question: I would like to know if anyone has information regarding special beds that promote circulation, thus increased oxygen to the brain. My sister seemed to be slightly more responsive while in this particular bed.

Answer: You asked about special beds for your sister. There are several companies that provide low loss air beds that promote circulation, dryness, and prevent injury to delicate skin. I'm not sure of your circumstances, do you have a case manager or rehab nurse? If so they could assist you in finding a bed that is appropriate for your sister.

One company is Cardio Systems Inc. in Dallas, Texas. The phone # is 1-800-527-0443. Another one is Invacare at 1-800-828-6282. My son has a Mediscus bed, the only number I have for them is 1-713-583-9232 in Houston, Texas.

My son has used a low loss air bed for 9 years with no skin breakdown. Some of the beds also provide lateral air cushions that automatically turn the person from side to side. These special beds also provide a continuous flow of air through the air chambers, keeping the skin dry, which prevents bedsores from beginning. Most allow you to control the amount of air pressure in each section of the bed, head, buttocks, feet, etc.

I suppose the final decision about a bed for your sister will depend on the cost factor, the degree of her disability, and her placement. Some of the beds are meant for hospital use, some for home use.

For my son, the rehab nurse convinced the insurance people that it was more cost effective to purchase a bed than to continue renting one at the rehab place, for $500. a month. Her argument was that he would always spend more than the normal time in his bed due to the severity of his tbi.
