Barack Obama’s Speech on Race

Barack Obama and Race, brain injury, PCS
As the readers of this blog have probably already figured out, while I am a trial lawyer, I spend a significant amount of time and thought involved in this years election campaign. While I am not the first to say it, Barack Obama’s speech in Philadelphia on March 18, 2008 was one of the most important comments on race ever given. What made it important was just not its potential impact on this week’s news cycle, which had Obama severely criticized for his membership in a church where his pastor has made racially and politically inflamatory remarks from time to time. What made it even more important is that it honestly discussed the lack of political correctness that our entire country looks at race. Barack did not berate residual racial biases, but called for our entire country to take this time as the time to move past our divisions, to work together as different but caring people who shared common goals. I believe it is important that everyone hear his words. They do mark a new beginning for us.
